RADIO CARS (Reuters) – A truck loaded with a fake version of the United States flag in Tanzania was vandalized on Thursday night near its port of Tawasi, a local police captain and his wife said, as authorities attempted to prevent other vehicles from coming to a stop on the street in front of the U.S. headquarters.

A police truck was at the scene when it was approached and struck by a car running red lights. The driver of a truck and several passengers were killed and one of the victims was seriously injured, police said.

A spokesman for the U.S. consulate in Tanzania’s capital city said about 100 people arrived from all over Tanzania to the police station to file complaints and gather information after the incident.

A convoy of U.S. vehicles, mainly pickups, was heading off to Tanzania, but one vehicle that left the port of Tawasi hit the bus. It caused extensive damage, police said.

The driver of the truck took his own life, police said.

«We still haven’t been able to identify any of the people who took their lives,» a police official, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to comment publicly, said.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s comments on his recent visit to the country show that he’s a clear supporter of democratic rights and a champion of civil liberties—even though he rarely mentions issues important to many Australians.

For instance, Abbott spoke to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and former Labor minister Tony Windsor at the opening of the new Sydney Trade and Investment conference in November and discussed Australia’s growing business climate, while expressing deep admiration for the civil liberties and social and civil liberties of its citizens. He made his remarks at the opening of a $100-million trade summit held at Adelaide’s Avent in October.

«We have strong civil liberties, we have a strong democratic constitution and we have very strong laws to enforce them… In fact, we have even a law that outlaws corruption, which gives police all the tools they need to carry out their job, and so the problem as a whole remains whether someone is corrupt.»

Abbott also stated that his government was going to take action over the past eight months to bring better services to vulnerable people at the most expensive levels, and in order to help children.

He also announced that his ministry would consider moving to a third country for new laws that would provide for «the full equality of citizenship to all Australians and the protection afforded by the Human Right Act 1998,
